You first have to look into what type of business is best suited for what you have planned. A simple sole proprietorship, or DBA (Doing Business As) is probably one of the most common ways to go about it. It goes up from there. Different types of business permits offer different levels of benefits, and or protections.
Go to your county tax assessors office, and they probably be glad to give you a stack of papers and explain things.

LOL Maybe because the law says yer supposed to report all earnings? I mean, you like having paved roads to drive to work on don't you? If you have an emergency, you expect someone to show up. Right?
Taxes might be evil, but they are pretty necessary.
