Technically it is the same species as the black rat (depending whose systematics you follow), but it is the Texas subspecies. The common name is Texas Ratsnake. They are a very common snake here in the eastern 2/3 of the state. They are probably the most common "big" snake found in residential areas and around human habitation in most of Texas.
