Identifying anything based on just a description is tricky (and often dangerous.) Knowing what part of Alabama you live in would help, too. (I live in Alabama too, and there can be a lot of geographic variation.)
I'm going to GUESS Rat Snake. But that's a GUESS, not an ID! Without a picture, there won't be a positive ID.
