CENTRALIAN ADVOCATE (Alice Springs, Australia) 05 December 08 Slithering snake a record-breaker (Jonathan Howard)
A King Brown snake measuring 2.1metres could be the biggest of its type caught in Alice Springs, said snake catcher Justin Rutherford.
Justin captured the slithery serpent after a call from a Heffernan Road resident on Monday morning.
The King Brown snake, also known as a mulga snake, was found wrapped around the resident's pool pump equipment.
At 2.1m long, the snake weighs a whopping 3kg.
Justin said: "It's the biggest mulga I've ever seen in this area and could be the biggest on record in Alice Springs."
He urged Centralians to be aware of snakes and take precautions at night or in grassy areas. The recent rain and hot weather had created ideal conditions for snakes and other reptiles.
He said: "If you discover a snake do not attempt to touch or handle it."
Alice Springs is home to three of the top 20 most venomous snakes in the world -- the mulga, Western Brown and Eastern Brown.
The giant snake can be seen at the Reptile Centre on Stuart Terrace. The emergency snake callout number is 0407 983 276.
