Oh, I don't doubt there may be some alive somewhere in the US. They keep bringing them in from time to time and trying to get them established, but with typically bad results. They are the most delicate of the Atheris species that are imported and I don't know of anyone who has kept them alive for a full year yet. The babies you saw photos of fairly recently probably were the ones born at Crotalus and Company and they came from two imported females that were gravid when imported. The babies didn't last long and, even though he kept them alive for months, all of the adults perished, as well. My advice to anyone who admires this beautiful species, but has no extensive experience with Atheris is to go with a hardier species and leave hispida alone. I've worked with Atheris for over ten years and still haven't messed with hispida.
