Reminds me of an old joke: A young and old bull are standing on a hillside over looking a herd of cows. The young bull says, "what do you say about us running down there and breeding a few of those cows?" to which the old bull say, "what do you say to us walking down there and breeding them all?"

Point is I would think that your answer would depend on the age, health and experience of the male. First time males can be slow starters but given a few years (perhaps its familiarity with the females) they seem to get the job done quicker.

Assuming its a younger male, if you wanted to use him more widely perhaps you could stager bringing the females to breeding condition. Of course that opens up the can-o-worms about how you're keeping them.
