You can buy it by the bale at lawn and garden shops, and be sure that it is the long fiber type sphagnum. The nice thing about it is that it retains water well, provides a soft substrate, and naturally inhibits mold growth. Separate it off the bale somewhat and soak it for 5 or 10 minutes in a 5 gallon bucket. Wring out the excess water in large handfuls and spread over the bottom of the nest box at about 4 to 6 inches deep. Keep it moist by daily heavy spraying until the female lays. Once she has coiled around the eggs, spraying a little water over her every three days or so will keep the sphagnum moist under the eggs for the duration of the incubation period. Also, make sure you keep the ambient humidity of the nest cage between 85% and 95% relative humidity. | ||
