Posted by: Jungleclark at Fri Jan 1 22:22:11 2010 [ Email Message ] [ Show All Posts by Jungleclark ] The Snake Farm (AKA Louisiana Biological Supply Company) was a roadside attraction in LaPlace, La., but it's main business was reptile and herptile products. Remember the ads "Live color-changing chameleons!! That was one of the Snake Farms Ads. C.C. McClung owned it and in 1966-1967 he started up the Snake Farm in New Braunfuls, TX. I had a chance to manage the Texas location as I worked for C.C. at LaPlace, but I didn't want to move to Texas. Dan Vicnair was in charge of the day-to-day operations in LaPlace. I once unloaded a shipment of basilisk lizards from South America that had a pair of smuggled shrunken heads (REAL) hidden in with the lizards. When I showed Dan the heads he said, "Those are for Art Jones over in Slidell." Art owned the Jungle Adventure Snake Farm in Slidell before becoming rich & famous as the inventor of the Nautilus Machines. I later read that those same shrunken heads were sold at auction in 1991 for $250,000! I lived in the rear of the Snake Farm with my new wife and worried about the giant Chimp called "Bobby" that was a true maniac. He was fully 6 ft. tall and was big enough that he was advertised on the billboards as being a "Gorilla". We were always terrified he would break loose from his cage and kill anybody he encountered. And he would if he could!!! I cleaned cages, trimmed rat teeth, ground up chicken heads for baby gator food, fed ALL the animals, including a 23 ft. Retic!, hunted the swamps at night collecting frogs and lizard to sell. The Snake Farm was NOT a whorehouse or anything like that, The Snake Farm at LaPlace, La. was a true American roadside attraction as well as a legitimate animal dealer. Jungle Clark, in the wilds of Florida. [ Hide Replies ] | ||
