I ENCOUNTERED THE SAME PROBLEM WITH A LITTER SEVERAL YEARS AGO. THESE WERE CAUSED BY A SMALL FLY LAYING EGGS UNDER THE SCALES. THREE OF SIX WITH THE PROBLEM DIED. ON THE OTHERS, I USED A STERILIZED NEEDLE TO POKE THE LARVAE TO DEATH. THESE THREE SURVIVED. THESE FLIES SEEMED TO CONGREGATE ONLY AROUND WET SUBSTRATE. I HAVE SINCE KEPT THEM MUCH DRIER. IF THIS TURNS OUT TO BE THE PROBLEM, GOOD LUCK.
