This federal attack on snake keepers has crossed the line. There is no place other than the everglades in this country that is having a problem with ferrel snakes. The problem is entirely a Florida State problem and the rest of the nation should not have to suffer for it. On top of this, Florida has a lot of other ferrel animals that have never been addressed . I have lived in Ft Lauderdale and have seen flocks of parrots, wild troops of monkeys, and wild pigs everywhere in the state. I can't tell you how many oscars I have caught while fishing for bass in the everglades. I could not even begin to tell you about the non-native vegetation. Ferrel dogs and cats are a national problem but nobody wants to talk about that !
The burmese python problem in the everglades will never spread outside of the state. Uncontrolled land development and habitat fragmentation in the state has made large native snakes like the indigo snake and eastern diamondback rattlesnake increasingly rare. They are only found now in isolated pockets of favorable habitat. When they roam out of these pockets they are run over by cars or killed by people. These same problems large native snakes face will also stop the spread of the pythons.
The large constrictor snake problem is a Florida problem.........period. There are better solutions to this problem than punishing the entire national reptile industry.
