Dear Mr. Thomas:

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me on the proposed ban on pythons and exotic snakes. I always appreciate hearing from my fellow Kansans.

As you may know, Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) has introduced S. 373, which would amend the federal criminal code to add the constrictor snake of the species Python genera to the list of injurious species that are prohibited from being shipped or imported into the United States. The bill has been reported out of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and awaits further action on the Senate floor.

As the father of five, I understand the concerns of parents in keeping our children safe. However, we should not impose unnecessary, burdensome regulations that threaten the individual rights and freedoms of our citizens. Additionally, I believe in limiting the role of the federal government and its interference in the matters of the states. This is an issue better addressed at the local level, and would set a dangerous precedent of federal government control of people’s pets.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. Rest assured, I will keep your comments in mind should this bill come before the Senate. Please visit my website, http://brownback.sentate.gov , for more information on the issues on which I am working.

Sincerely,

Sam Brownback
United States Senator
