Cannibalism is almost always (note I said "almost" inadvertent, and occurs when two snakes try to eat the same prey item.
Properly cycled snakes (even kingsnakes)can safely be left together for long periods during mating season, but yes, once again I always seperate them for feeding-males usually won't feed at all this time of year, however.
