You could also use the plastic 'egg crate' from the lighting section at Lowes or HD. Lay a piece of it on top of the vermiculite and then the eggs can sit on it.

I always used perlite but cannot find any local anymore that is not the miracle grow brand. The miracle grow brand has fertilizer added so it's no good. So I've gone to using either sphagnum or the egg crate method.
