I generally use vermiculite and buy the big bags for about $10.-$12. at a nursery. I like the coarse much better and never use the fine.

I also buy sphagnum moss in bags about as big.You can get perlite in these big bags too.
Sometimes when I buy perlite, I wait 'til after the "growing" season and get closeout prices on the smaller bags.
Much cheaper then.
