There have been a lot of cross specific lines of testing done. personally i have bred hybrids and found that many similar recessive traits are allelic even though the two traits are hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles apart or are from different ssp.
I am not saying that the axanthic splendida and the axanthic florida are allelic. Just speculation that snakes do originate from one ancestor and recessive trait are shared even though these animals come from different geographic ranges and even cross subspecific lines.
below is a pic of a Whitesided blackratsnake (aka licorice stick blackrat) i crossed into the Whitesided Everglades rat (aka Ghost glades) . the result was the two traits were allelic (3rd pic).
