Previously, I have experienced keeping Red, Steppes, Black, and Texas rat snakes, but this is my first Radiated. I was actually on a quest for a Trinket when I diverted last minute and instead got this male, sub adult.
For a feisty, aggressive (or defends themselves well) species, he handles very well. Jerking and bolts stopped after a few weeks, and handling is mostly predictable.
Usually tolerant of movement near him, we live in a Studio apartment, he sometimes retreats to his den if you approach.
When I let him out to play while cleaning his biome, a 60-gallon vivarium, he stays in his fake Ficus tree quietly most of the time until time to go back in. Often, in the same spot
Later, I will dare outside journeys, with great caution. I can see him perched in some low tree, far from other vegetation, enjoying the scene.
With his larger eyes, he DEFINITELY seems very alert & more intelligent than most Rat snakes. I can see why this species is a favorite for many who stumble upon it.
Interestingly reclassified as Coelocanthus from the old Elaphe, this snake appears to be a true hybrid between a Constrictor and Racer class snakes. It has the best traits of both breeds, and I'm enjoying mine more and more each month.
As he gets older, his middle sides are getting more pinkish orange in color, and patterns are getting more pronounced. Still no copper on his neck or head; he is more caramel there.
No photos yet, sorry. All that I've taken just did not work out due to lighting. Photos later...
