As they attempt to climb, the mesh walls give way towards the outside making it harder for them to sustain any upward momentum. If the panels were rigid, perhaps they could extend the three plus feet needed to breach the top. Also, there is a four inch wide rim at the top that extends over the pen. Here is a photo of my five foot male Sonoran in the pen with the top rim visible. I have left all of my large adults in the pen for hours and most of the males in there for overnight and not one has even come close to topping the pen.
