Acquiring a Cat and a kitten -

We have been looking for a new cat (our recently died) and have a dilemma. While we wanted a kitten, there were so many older cats for adoption and we felt that we should do our part and provide a home to one of these cats. We are now contemplating getting an older cat (10 months to several years) that 'plays well with other cats' and a 12 week old kitten. An ideas on this strategy and also on how we might acclimate them?
