Question About Catnip

Just a quick question: why does catnip have no effect on some cats? I have had three cats during my life (two I have now, one as a child) and none of them have cared one whit for catnip. I have heard all these stories about cats going nuts over the stuff, but mine have no reaction to it whatsoever. Anyone know what the deal is?
