Hi!
Cats that are kept indoors only sometimes have a lot of pent up energy that would normally spend itself during the hunt. As cat owners we have to make sure they get lots of playtime that comes close to the real thing - chasing toys, running around, fighting and 'killing' toys. It sounds like yours is a little frustrated in that department. I know what you mean by that howling sound, mine does that too, but luckily we have a second cat that is actually turned on by it, and wild chase and mock fight is usually happening as a result, until they are both satisfied. Looks like your cat took you as a prey substitute. Try and play wild with him next time he howls and cries, no need to be scared of him! Use toys to make him run, stretch, and chase.
