A few days ago my 1 1/2 year old cat, Starla, suddenly started acting very strangely. She began meowing very loudly at all hours of the day and night and for several minutes at a time, which is something she has never done before. I thought at first that she was sick or had swallowed something, but last night I noticed that she is itching very badly. She scratches herself, rubs against furniture, wiggles her butt, and meows continuously for twenty and thirty minutes at a time. When I help her by scratching or brushing her, she behaves as if this is the greatest relief she has ever experienced, sticking her rear up in the air and sort of kicking her back legs at the same time. She seems to generate an excessive amount of dander when she is itching, which is something she has always done when stressed. She has also been licking around her tail area alot. She is an indoor cat and has been spayed for almost a year. The only recent thing that has happened to her is that she was introduced to my family's dogs about five days ago. I am thinking that she may have picked up fleas or is having some kind of delayed reaction to stress -- her odd behavious did not begin until at least two days after the visit with the dogs. I have treated her with flea powder in hope that this will help. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I will take her to the vet if she doesn't settle down soon, but I would be glad to avoid the charge for the office call if anyone has any ideas!
