This often occurs if the cat experiences pain when it tries to eat. Check the cat's mouth for inflamed gums and loose teeth. If these can't be immediately taken care of, take fresh meat or canned food, add an equal amount of water, and liquify it in a blender so that the cat can take it as a liquid.
