If you have the room ambients that high, then the temp gradient will still be just fine. But I like the darkness factor, plus it uses a little less electricity, as less heat is lost to the air. Other than that though, people use the open systems just fine. It also allows you to see copulation, egg-laying, sheds, etc etc without opening the cage up, so an open rack definitely has its benefits!! Its all about personal preference, as well as each room/house/city/country is different. The mark of a successful breeder is one that can adapt to whatever climate and create the right setup.
If its working for you, I wouldn't change it man!!!
I also use a very very shallow hide-box. This has turned many of my females into eating machines!! They like to wedge underneath it! The just have their head resting out a little bit, waiting to pounce on any rat that I wave in front of them!!
