I use Aspen shavings and they work fine. They hold moisture but not too much. BTW Aspen and Poplar are the same thing. People in the west call them aspen, and people in the east tend to call them poplar. There are many species of aspen/poplar (quaking, broadleaf, etc) but they all are the same genis and should all work similar for substrate for a BP.
