Mud turtle is the common name given to two genera of aquatic turtles, Kinosternon, found in North and South America, and Pelusios, found in Africa. Known for their dull shell colors and preferring shallow, slow moving bodies of water with muddy bottoms, and having a dome shaped carapace.

Musk turtle is the common name given to three genera of aquatic turtles, Sternotherus, Staurotypus, and Claudius, due to their ability to release a foul musky odor to deter predation. Found in North and Central America, they are very similar to the American mud turtles, but tend to have a more domed carapace, with a distinctive keel down the center.

Here you may post messages or questions pertaining to all aspects and issues regarding the keeping, breeding, health, and conservation of species and subspecies of Mud and Musk Turtles.
