One of the major reasons that you do not want to mix newts with tropical fish is the different temperature requirements. Newts and salamanders in general like much cooler environments than most tropical fish. If you keep the newts at a comfortable temperature (usually under 70 degrees F) then this will be too cool for most tropicals. An exception would be white clouds, which do well at lower temps. Some people have also reported successfully mixing zebra danios and newts as well. Keeping newts at higher temps will only result in prolonged stress and most often death. As already mentioned other variables such as tank size, number of animals, and method of filtration are also important. Go to caudata.org for the best information regarding newt care.
