I wonder if the outcome would be the same with just separating them for a few weeks and then reintroducing. Was it the fact that one of them got to breed, or that they didn't remember each other and/or were just no longer used to each other's presence? I guess it's something unlikely to be tested, as I'm sure your friend doesn't want to have to separate his other pair if he can avoid it, but the thought occurred to me.
