I've used aspen shavings for years now, and my three different species of plateds do great in them. I am VERY careful with feeding (large, broad, higher-edged dishes), in order to avoid impaction issues. But all in all, the aspen is still cheap (I buy the huge Kaytee bails), and is remarkably absorbent and naturally odor controlling.
