Before getting into a life long commitment, I would do as much research beforehand as possible. They're going to get really big. They will need outdoor space. They will need to have heat, year round. I would start with Melissa Kaplan's very informative page: http://www.anapsid.org/sulcata.html. She can be a bit of a downer, but it's written in a way to try and make sure that you do really want a sulcata before getting one.
