Look at the american alligator once on the verge of extinction now there is abundance. We farm them there is a market for them. Not saying I agree with it but the tactics that are used to save the wild tigers and other endangered wildlife have failed miserably. If you allow people to take them from the wild during certain times and for a hefty fee the poachers become the protectors.
