They need to drink at least 8 ounces many times a day, I forgot how many times exactly. you can start introducing solids after they are 6 months of age, but they still need to drink formula certain amount, but you can cut back. AFter one year, they can pretty much get protein from eggs and meat I believe, and other nutrients from other food, but can now drink cow's milk, which is lower in nutrients, but they still drink milk certain amount each day.
