Thomas was the one calling it a Mongrel. It's a trade name to designate a certain cross, like Jungle Corn or Imperial Pueblan. I was just asking about a post he made some time ago in which he showed splendida x nigrita babies and I thought I remembered him calling them Mongrel Kings too.

I think some taxonomists are looking at grouping the holbrooki, floridana, nigra and getula getula into one species and spendida, nigritis and californiae into another. The eastern varieties do seem to have thicker bodies and relatively smaller heads so I think it might be true.
