"Most" will allow you to take a small bird in an airline approved carrier as a "carryon" but there are a few that insist on them going in with regular luggage, then you have to specify that they are not run through the xray and are instead checked in individually. When you are closer to ready to move either let me know the airline and I will see if I have or can find any info on them or call their office directly for information.
