It happens when it is muddy out. Best to let the mud dry, then brush it off. If you do get scratches, I clipped the hair, picked the scabs, cleaned with soapy water, dried, then applied Corona. Hate the feel of the stuff personally but it leaves a protective coating on the skin that allows it to heal and keeps it protects from new mud.
