My cat (Asti-rest in peace) did that wehn he was about a year old and several times over his life span of 17 years. He only hissed and growled (a horrible low grwol/moan) when he had a UTI which, for him, always ened up being bladder stones. You really need to get kitty to the vet immediately to rule out something medical that is causing him/her pain. Could be the pain came when it was time to urinate.

Good luck and let us know if it was medical or beharioral.
