I would look for a second opinion, ideally at a clinic who specializes in cats, or a university vet school...both should have more up to date ideas and treatments, and could offer insight. As for the vets reasoning, I can't say it is impossible, but there needs to be something done about this, and if he doesn't have an answer, then you should find someone who does.
