Rabies isn't recommended for cats under six months, however your community may require it by law. You should check with the shelter to see for sure what if any shots were given. Also you may want to ask the vet to do a titer to see what immunities the kitten may have (he may have been vacccinated or may have picked up some immunities from his mother's milk.)
