On the nights of 22-24 July 2003, serious thefts of Chelonia took place from Carapax, the European Centre for Conservation of Chelonians, Massa Marritima, Grosseto, Tuscany, Italy.
Stolen:
34 Testudo hermanni hermanni,
10 Testudo hermanni,
1 Tesudo hermanni boettgeri,
1 Graptemys pseudogeografica,
1 Emys orbicularis,
1 Chelydra serpentina (Snapping),
1 Astrochelys radiata (Madagascar Radiated Tortoise),
1 Geochelone pardalis (Female Leopard Tortoise) ,
8 Terrapene carolina carolina (American Box Turtles), 7 Terrapene carolina mayor (Florida Box Turtles),
17 Terrapene triunguis (Three Toed Box Turtle) and
2 Varanus niloticus (Monitor Lizards).
All of the animals are identifiable having unique markings. This is a devastating blow to the conservation of the aforementioned species and we
appeal for any information as to the whereabouts of the stolen animals.
Should such a collection be offered or checked whilst in transit, please call
John Hayward at the National Theft Register on:
