The numbers refer to the sex of the animals. The number to the left of the decimal is males, and the number to the right is females. Thus 4.2 would mean 4 males and 2 females.



On a side note, if they add another decimal, it means hatchlings of undetermined sex. For example 0.0.2 means 2 unsexed babies.
