Last year - my amel double clutched w/o second mating - one egg looked viable, I didn't candle but it looked OK - it quickly shriveled up however.
This year, I fed her only sparsly after her first clutch to see if it would prevent the double clutch. Yeah - I could have just thrown her in with a male, but I don't want to deal with that many neonates.
She double clutched again anyway - most were infertile, but this time, there are five that potentially look viable - and she layed those five in a typical clutch like fashion (there were two infertile in the group, but the rest of the infertile were spread all over the tub).
5 potential extra neonates isn't that big of a deal, so I'm incubating them.
What's interesting - in both cases, the first shed after her intended clutch was the prelay for the second. It seems at least with many colubrids, there is one shed post first clutch before they are ready to mate again.
It will be interesting to see if any of these eggs make it.
