If they retreating to opposite ends of the cage for long periods of time, then they are probably not ready yet and you can separate them and try again in a few days..
BUT, jerky/twitchy movement is 100% normal mating behavior and a sign that your animals are ready to breed. Put them together again and wait it out a little longer.
