They'll be ready. I've got some 10 year olds that are about 3-1/2 feet. I've seen far more egg binding in proven breeders than with first-time breeders. I think a lot of it has to do with what the previous individuals who posted mentioned - lack of muscle tone and/or infertile eggs.
