Okay, to add to this thread...
When I was a teenager I saw a city parks official valiantly kill a Texas rat snake before a cringing woman and her kids. He then proclaimed, "Yep, that's a copperhead." I regret being so shy as a kid; I could have saved the snake and schooled some people at the same time.
