My vet said the fresher the better *shrug* and she's done OK with other stuff.
As far as quaruntine...he's been in my care about 3 months now. No prior issues. My quaruntine practices aren't ideal simply because I don't have a seperate room. I wash and soap between each cage, and don't mix things like water bowls or substrate...but I don't have a seperate room to use for it. Just wash utensils and hands between cages.
I don't usually run fecals or bloodwork unless I have a specific reason too. I mean, he was a rescue, but he came from a kid, that didn't have any other herps...
and no, you can't see protozoans with the nakes eye but a major parasite load can result in *really& bizzare poop
