Yes, the fresher the poop, the better it is to get the right prognosis from a vet, simple as that. There is a VERY good chance that it is carrion fly larvae in the poop like the others mentioned. They love to lay their eggs in snake poop for some reason.
Get some sticky trap tapes, and hang them up, or some bigger traps at places like Tractor Supply, and feed stores. These places have lots of these for flies.
Another thing is, You can get a small container of Cider vinigar, and add a drop of dish detergent to the surface of it, this will also attract them, and drown them too. I hate those little bastards!..LOL!
