I've used both alone, and mixed, and did just as well no matter which I used. I actually prefer Perlite, I feel like it lets more air around all points of the egg, while keeping most of the moisture at the bottom. But I found a HUGE bag of vermiculite a few years ago and have plenty of that. All of the Perlite I find that has no additives is in small bags.
