I was 13 in '71, and had met my first snake the year before in 7th grade biology class. I grew up in Anchorage, AK, so that was my only likely way to encounter a snake. It was a boa. We had another in 9th grade, but I didn't own my first snake until my senior year of college in Abilene, TX. No pictures though.
