"Is the patternless gene responsible for snakes like Johns (see Spots above)?"
You mean like Mike's? I don't think anybody knows whether the patternless is a single gene mutation or multi. The Patternless can look just like that but I don't know if Mike's are the same thing. There are the Dan Johnson patternless Black Gaps and there are the Dan Coffee line of abberrants which can look similar and they are non-locality. There is also regular speckling that occurs in naturally many localities, which can be selectively bred to produce more and more speckling each generation. Historically when one says "speckled alterna" they are just refering to any Grayband that has naturally occuring speckling in various amounts. I think that the Dan Johnson Black Gaps and the Dan Coffee abberrants are actual mutations. With the Dan Johnson's and possibly the Coffee's as well, the pattern can actually be completely erased on parts, turning solid gray on the dorsal surface, begining at the nuchal region and going down the length of the body. I don't think the natural speckleds do this. In my experience the natural speckled ones just get more and more filled in with speckling between the bands. The overall effect is very similar but the pattern doesn't actually erase. Mike's look like the Coffee line but that's just a guess on my part.
I am working with the Dan Johnson Black Gap patternless' but so far I have only produced one clutch. I will try to post some pics within the next few days. ----- www.hcu-tx.org/
