Davy -- the next time a snake has latched onto something you don't want it to (e.g., a plastic bag, your hand, another snake), take it to the nearest sink and run cold water over it (holding the snake's head tilted down). The animal will release its grip very quickly. Cheap and fast and it always has worked for me.
