Wow, those are some nice snakes there. I like your set up with the rocks and all that.
Have you ever tried a flash diffuser like this?

It softens the light a bit and flashes down over a larger area. This whole thing lights up when the flash hits it. You just slide it over your lens. You're still going to get a reflection, just not as bright. Here's some of the pictures I've taken using it.
